in on street in concord. christie smith is live this morning with a look at the damage. a rough way to start a week, huh, christie? >> reporter: good morning, jon. i'm sure these car owners do not want to deal with this. someone slashed the tires on 60 cars in this neighborhood. in most cases they hit all four tires. you can see two tires flattened and a van in the driveway. someone hit that one as well. two more minivans across the street. we're on the east side of clayton road. this vandalism extends to the west side. concord police got calls around 7:00 sunday morning. the more they investigated, the worse it got. vandals hit cars in the same neighborhood. concord police say it's under investigation. they haven't said anything about suspects or arrests but i can tell you within the last maybe 10 to 15 minutes or so, i did see concord police officer driving very slowly down the street with the spotlight on looking at the cars and kind of looking into homes and bushes here but just kind of cruising around. obviously they are still very much looking into this. reporting live in concord, chri

"today in the bay's" christie smith is live in concord right now and has the rest of that story. good morning. >> reporter: good morning to you, jon. what a way to start the week. this is not just expensive, it's widespread. it's on several blocks here in concord. dozens of tires slashes and in most cases we're talking about all four of the tires on the vehicle like this suv. also the van there in the driveway. that one was hit. a couple more down the street. two other cars and then across the road clayton road from where we are standing bel air drive there were some tires slashed there. concord police first heard of this sunday morning around 7:00 a.m. that's when some of the car owners phoned in with the problem. at least 60 cars with their tires slashed in all and the more they looked around, the worst it got. glacier drive, bel air drive, and some of the streets actually connect here. it looks like whoever did this may have just

right new in san jose and livermore along with concord and 41 in novato but it is freezing in napa and sap -- santa rosa. today, we will have sunny conditions. it will be milder with temperatures from 5 to 10 degrees warmer than yesterday. mostly clear and cold again tonight. we will have frost inland and a slow warming trend this afternoon and tomorrow and friday afternoon. yesterday, while we were sleeping, the wet weather slid to southern california. this next system up here is going to slide inside and the storm track now will move over washington, oregon, nevada, idaho, utah, and bypass us. we will have the cold air for at least a couple of days during the overnight hours. if you have been protecting the pets and plants you may have to do it tonight and tomorrow. now, this afternoon, it will be mostly sunny and we will have a few puffy clouds. up the peninsula, our warm spot is redwood city at 60 and everyone else in the mid-to-upper 50's with 54 today at half moon bay and 56 in daly city and south san francisco and downtown san francisco 57 this afternoon and in the upper 50'

francisco i'm tara moriarty ktvu channel 2 news. >>> time is 5:02. over night news a crash in concord leaves one man with life threatening injuries. police say he was walking across clayton road at about 6:15 last night. investigators say the 52-year- old man was not in the crosswalk at the time. he was rushed to john mere medical center. they do know who hurt anymore >>> copper thees are are causing major trough. he's in river mother right few. >> reporter: copper thieves may be making your commute even worse and that is because they are going after the valuable copper wire that is in street lights and freeway signs and yes even in those freeway metering lights. like where we are this morning. this is isabel avenue and 580 in livermore right now. cal tran essentially saying they have seen 59 metering lights vandalized around the bay area in just the past year. and crews have only been able to fix 18 of them so far. problem is it costs about $35,000 to repair those meters and cal tran essentially just says they are having trouble keeping up. and in the meantime that is leading to more backup

in santa rosa, 4. 47 in fairfield with a pretty gusty wind there. concord 39. gilroy and los gatos in the low to mid-40s. this is the reason some of you are feeling warmer. we have northerly winds and with those northerly winds the atmosphere is well mixed. that's allowing for temperatures to stay up, especially at the airport. the north wind at 22 miles an hour. we are looking at lighter north winds around the bay. but with a warmer start and a warmer atmosphere we will allow for temperatures to see a rebound today. more 60s around the bay. so sunny skies. it will be warmer. dry and mild for the rest of the week. it looks like march coming in like a lamb. and the next possibility of rain may be looking into the next weekend. so we will see a couple of systems drop our temperatures from day-to-day, but overall high pressure as it gets closer to the coast is going to allow for the warmup today. a couple weak systems every other day will flatten the ridge, then it rebuilds. that will being the pa earn right on through the rest of the week until thursday and friday. then the numbers r

we are in the east bay. look at concord at 33. 35 in livermore. usually we are much, much cooler here. with the end, we are looking at the numbers staying up. 46 san francisco, 38 redwood city. but it's cold in san jose at 35. later on today monterey look gorgeous for the third round of the pebble beach program. 39 right now. 33 in watsonville. just 30 in gilroy. so mostly clear and cool this morning in spots. in fact near freezing in some spots. sunny and dry over the weekend. looks like the mild weather pattern, it's going to last right into next week. we are getting close to president's day where we certainly could use some new snow. but we are looking at the system sinking to the south and east of us. this is what brought our rain on thursday, into thursday night. now we have the big ridge of high pressure once again, allowing for a cool and drying trend. so we have the flow below, the counter clockwise flow and the clock rice flow around the high allowing for the atmosphere to certainly stay dry and the jet stream to stay well to the north of us. that allows for the dry pattern a

is 46 and concord is 45 and los gatos 42 and gilroy at 38 degrees. we going to have partly sunny conditions and you can see today and cooler weather and a stray shower possible but wet on tuesday with snow levels down to possibly 2,500'. the high pressure and the cold front is pushed out of the way and it is a long cold front. today we have cooler weather and more humidity with the wind and tomorrow the cold front comes through with a sharp lifting mechanism creating showers. tomorrow morning, a few showers are possible and headed after the commute the rain is in the not bay and moving through the heart of the day in the mid-morning and noon in the south bay. by 2:00 it is gone. however, there are more showers tuesday evening through the north bay and the heart of the bay and by 11:00 it is gone. we will get quarter to possibly .5" in our higher elevations. today's temperature at the coast if the low 40's, low 50's and mid-to-upper 50's for the rest of us with temperatures coolest tomorrow in the upper 40's to low 50's and we rebound but stay in the 50's for the better part of fo

know on the hayward side there's fog. concord, livermore, napa, santa rosa. yesterday, it was the north bay. patchy fog but hazy and warm. mostly sunny. higher clouds. next rain, thursday, friday. next thursday, friday. although it's looking more like a colder system than a rainy system. we need the rain. if you thought where is the breeze, there has not been much. others in the east bay, have a pretty good offshore wind continuing. that for shom the offshore breeze is in place. that means the coast has really nice weather. temperatures on the lows are even warmer that morning than yesterday it will be sunny. mostly cloudy. there's some higher clouds. i think most of those day towards more central california. 30s for some. 49. redwood city, san rafael is at 41. livermore is 32. so some of those higher clouds to the south, the forecast model picks up on it a little bit. mainly about san jose south and then the fog will fall apart. there will be some but then it will go away. today, a challengey start. hazy sunshine. highs, 7 in clearlake. 70 in gilroy. sonoma is in there. st. helena warm

in concord that gutted a second story unit on tioga road. barbara dell is live at the complex and joins us now. crews did a good job of containing the fire. >> reporter: kept it from spreading much further. the fire department has left within the past hour. the fire is out, the residents are safe and most of the evacuees have been allowed back inside to their homes here. this after a fire ripped through one of their neighbor's units early this morng. now, the fire department tells us the woman who live there is is very lucky she made it out unharmed. >> the good thing is that the homeowner had a working smoke alarm. it woke her up this morning and saved her life. >> without it? >> without it, she probably would have at least needed rescue and may have even killed her. >> reporter: the fire department believes the fire was accidental. that it started around a gas fireplace in that unit just before 7:00 this morning. they are still trying to figure out what was the source of ignition. the fire destroyed her unit, damaged the unit below and next door. when the fire department arrived, the fir

a little bit more fog this morning. santa rosa, napa, concord, livermore. saw north bay and east bay. over all it's another nice day on tap here. similar to what we had yesterday. i'm kind of happy here. although it's showing up for a little too long. we could use rain now. it's been quiet for four year weeks. sunny and warm weather. highs 60s low for some to 70 for others. mostly sunny. there will be higher clouds coming in. i think most of that will be san jose south. no big deal. there will be some. 30s and 40s to almost 50- degrees in san francisco. antioch 31. livermore 36 but not far away. you can find a little bit of fog and temperatures in the 40s. it just depends. higher clouds coming up to the southwest are taking an aim to central and southern california. i know it's a reach but just letting you know. sunny and warm. a little bit more fog this morning. hazy skies. 60s mid to upper. a little bit warmer. santa cruz 70 degrees. get that friday flu head over there. livermore 63. san mateo 64. and mountain view at 66. mostly sunny. hazy skies. a little bit of high clouds. that is it.

on highway 4 as well as you come up over the hill to concord not a bad drive at all. also the morning commute on the sunol grade is off to a good start. it's 5:00 let's go back to dave and pam. >>> topping our news this morning hundreds of people wer hurt by a giant meteor traveling 33,000 miles an hour. it crashed right into earth and left a crater 20 feet wide. home videos of the ten ton meteor streaking across russia are all over the internet. it happened about 1,000 miles east. look at those pictures. just incredible. this is 1,000 miles east of moscow leaving a trail of smoke over a mountain region. three impact sites. the biggest crater 20 feet wide. now more than 500 people are hurt though. mostly from broken glass. many were cut in the face. serious injuries have been reported. many will be hospitalized for at least the rest of the day. now there will be another cosmic event later this morning. an asteroid half the size of a football field will buzz by planet earth. lorraine blanco is at the chabot space and science center with more on that. >> reporter: it sounds like syfy but an as

have 5.62 for the calendar year at this point. concord with .48 and should have 4.34. we're in the driest trend ever for january and also february. we're going to get those numbers to flip for us here and we're eventually going to get rain in the seven-day forecast. today was all about the enjoyable sunshine. the warmest down in the south bay. 72 san jose. 77 in santa teresa. and you head up into the north bay 76 in san rafael and 71 in santa rosa. now these winter extremes were all over the board. gilroy, one of our warmest with 79 degrees, san rafael with 7. we were a few degrees away in both of those locations from all-time daily heat today so, again, highly unusual weather that we had today now smack in the middle of february. temperatures are cooling off. down in the south bay a nice night to maybe eat outside. a live look at our sky camera network tonight and this is, as i said earlier, the money shot. as we head into this time of the year, you get a warm day. we have the pollution. that's been making it uncomfortable but visually this is a stunner there in emeryvil

hate it when people say it's so cold in the bay area. no. not today. 35 degrees in concord. 41 in oakland. 40 degrees in gilroy. throughout the afternoon temperatures are going to be mild yet again. high pressure is the reason why it builds in for today and drives winds offshore as they move from land to sea they warm along the way. they push that marine layer back into the pacific and for us that means it is just going to get better and better temperaturewise. more and more comfortable as we head through friday. developing offshore wind really starts to kick into high gear throughout today and you notice that layer of haze, that particulate matter. unhealthy levels of pollution on the way likely as we head through the the end of the week. 64 in gilroy. 63 in los gatos. temperatures will be mild for today. staying mild all the way through valentine's day and that means if you want to hit the beach, a nice romantic picnic, a bottle of wine and a blanket is all you need. saturday and sunday as well if you don't get chance to get out on thursday because temperatures and conditions
